Javier Calderon, founder of the Guitar program at the University of Wisconsin, is presented by The Springfield Classical Guitar Society. This is an exciting concert, indeed. The Naxos release Hovhaness guitar concerto #2 is a favorite of mine. I hadn’t heard of Javier at the time I purchased the CD as I was new to classical guitar and Hovhaness. It was an amazing discovery of both Hovhaness and Mr Calderon. I am sure Mr Calderon will provide an outstanding concert in Springfield.
From his website: “When Javier Calderón played his solo recital debut at Carnegie Hall, the New York Times called him “…a virtuoso with poetic sensibility.” Since then many composers, including the eminent American Alan Hovhaness and Lawrence Weiner, have been writing and dedicating guitar concertos and solo pieces to Calderón.”
